If you're not sure what something means, please do ask in the
#chat-and-questions channel on our Discord server. There's no such thing as a stupid question, and it helps us all remember that using terms and acronyms feels alienating to those who are not familiar with them.
Roleplay Terms
I.C. and O.O.C.
IC = In Character: things that happen inside the story, with the characters and the fictional world.
OOC = Out Of Character: things that happen in real life, with the participants / players.
Larp
From acronym LARP or Live Action RolePlay: people performing characters in person.
N.P.C.
Non-Played Character, or Non-Player Character: a character who is referred to by other characters, but never actually encountered in person. These characters might have names and detailed personalities, or they might be nameless references to generic roles, eg: 'the butcher'.
Play
How we describe both writing characters online, and performing characters in person.
Post
Any single contribution to the storytelling by a player, eg: a line of dialogue with some narrative description. Posting only happens in online text-based roleplay.
R.P.G.
RolePlay Game: co-creating a story in collaboration with others, during which participants play only the characters they have created. Variations include TTRPG (TableTop RolePlay Game) and FFRPG (FreeForm RolePlay Game).
