Day 22 Morning
When I woke up, there were flashes of something running through my mind as I struggled to remember what had happened last night.
Clearest is the piercing sound of her scream which made my blood run cold.
I turned around so see what was wrong, and saw Eilidh, standing face to face with the long snout of one of the beasts.
It's head alone was over twice as big as her, with smoke billowing out of each nostril.
She stood frozen in front of it, fear in her eyes.
It opened it's mouth wide, revealing rows of sharp teeth and a blood red tongue the size of the front door.
I screamed, "Stop!"
I don't remember how, but I somehow managed to reach her. I scooped her up in my arms and carried her as I ran to the door.
The rough wood felt splintered against my hands as I forced the front door open.
We made it through, then the world went black.
Day 22 Evening
I didn't wake up until the afternoon. Someone had moved me to my bed upstairs, but I can see the scratches on my hands from where I fell on the stone floor.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Frida sat next to my bed. "You're up," she said surprised.
I looked around the room for a minute but I couldn't find my sister, "where's Eilidh?" I asked her.
"She's just gone down for a drink, she'll be back in a minute," Frida said, "she's fine, just a little shaken up."
I nodded, "thank you."
When she had gone, Ivar came to see me. Æstrid had told him that Eilidh hag gotten lost and that I had to go find her.
He was cross that we had stayed out late, but I could tell that he was pleased that we hadn't lost any of the sheep. I'm not entirely convinced he cared as much about us.
"How did you escape?" he asked towards the end of our conversation, "Eilidh said she was a face to face with the beast, yet you both survived."
"I don't know," I told him honestly, "I just screamed and ran."
"You were lucky then," he said as he got up, "I'll see you down for dinner?" He asked and I nodded.
When the others got home, Aleifr came running up the stairs to see me. His arm was bandaged up where he'd cut it yesterday.
We didn't say much, he just clung to me and cried until we had to go down for dinner.
